What People Are Saying: 5 Customer Reviews

  1. an amazing bjj school. I can say with absolute honesty that this is one of “thee” best places to study. Great atmosphere, good people and stellar training. the head coach Kevin Howell has trained and studied under some of the best to ever do it. He is a wealth of knowledge on old school techniques and blends it well with the new school. if you are passing through and love bjj they are friendly to visitors. If looking for a great place to learn bjj, this place has it all. giants to the small and young to the….not so young, all getting it done together. Kevin Howell knowledge in bjj is staggering. Always improving always pushing us. I’ve had the good fortune of making this place my home. come over and get a roll for yourself, you will see what I mean.

  2. I’ve been coming here for over a year and I can honestly say this is the most welcoming dojo I’ve ever been to! EVERYONE is humble and willing to learn from one another. The energy in this place is fantastic because the way it’s run. Professor Kevin Howell and his wife, Haley Howell (brown belt) and great. I was hooked on the first night. Now they’re family.

  3. Let me tell you about what kind of people the owners of Jiu Jitsu League are.

Only a month or two after joining, I decided to fundraise for a 5k run for non-profit event for Parkinson’s disease research for my father. Of all my friends and family, Hayley and Kevin were the FIRST to donate money to my fundraiser. Totally unexpected and appreciated. I honestly thought I was just going to be a number like any typical gym membership. They and all the members have been super supportive with me inside and outside of Jiu Jitsu.

Let me tell you about what kind of people I meet at the Jiu Jitsu League.

I live in a neighborhood with the worst parking conditions. I took an Uber to class one night. After one of basic classes, one of the members who I JUST met during that same class offered me a ride home. I could have been a serial killer or lived in Canada, but that member offered me a ride in his car without even knowing me.

Everyone at the gym is supportive and friendly. I was able to make friends very fast. There hasn’t been anyone I didn’t like or am afraid of.

The new location has plenty of parking, larger mat space, a filtered water fountain. There is a minimalist feel to the new gym. Less is more.

There is a Starbucks, Chipotle, BWW, Ralphs grocery store, Ulta, AMC, Barnes and Nobles, BOA ATM and local shops/restaurants that share the same plaza as the gym.

The gym schedule is awesome. In addition to their schedule, they now offer 9AM drilling classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is even Open Mat on Sundays too!

The gym also uses a brand new $500 Dyson vacuum cleaner to clean the mats. I bet there is no other gym in the universe that has invested in a Dyson to clean their gym.

There is positive karma and good vibes glowing out of this place. You don’t meet great, genuine, and kind people like this everyday.

I will defiantly stay as long as I can here. I am extremely thankful to be part of this community. Thank you Kevin and Hayley!

  4. I called to ask about training here while visiting from Out of town. The owners responded very quickly and were helpful in getting me current schedule details. So I Dropped in for a no-gi a.m. class. I’m a novice who has only been training a few months. Everyone was very welcoming, friendly and trained safely. Gym was super clean and all county covid health mandates were followed. I will definitely be back when I’m in the area. Great atmosphere and training partner.

  5. We had a blast at the annual Christmas party. If you need to learn how to defend yourself around really sweet and supportive people, The Jiu Jitsu league is for you.

My 13yo daughter has been going here for a few months and we live it. The people that run this place are amazing, the coaches truly care and are very attentive, and the parents are all really good people. The kids here are all so well behaved and they all really love participating in martial arts. So many positive and welcoming vibes here. My daughter was embraced into the family right away. We love the decision we made in joining BTT.

Marcelo is a force of a nature. Great gym, amazing team, and respectful atmosphere. My kids come to train BJJ as well and have come to love the teaching. I appreciate how the children’s’ classes reinforce the fundamentals letting children receive great instruction and material without sugar coating techniques.

The mentorship and training here is World Class. I have had the pleasure of training with Coach Marcelo, and he is very experienced and knowledgeable in his craft. He is a tough guy but very friendy and fun to be around! The people that I train with here are amazing as well, as they are very knowledge in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, as well as Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling and other martial arts. I love the vibes here, there is always something new to learn from your teammates and they always push you to be better and are there for you too. You can’t go wrong choosing this gym!

With a world class coaching staff, top of the line training facility, and culture focused on respect, safety, and competition, it’s no wonder BTT of Long Beach is the best rated jiu jitsu academy in the area. I’ve had the pleasure of training here since the beginning of the year (2019) and don’t think I’ll ever leave. If you’re looking around for a jiu jitsu academy, you’ve probably read very similar comments to the one I made above but here are 3 very unique reasons why I love BTT of Long Beach. Exposure to Higher Belts – Higher belts are instructed to, when possible, pair up with lower belts for training and sparring/rolling. As a white belt, this is HUGE. I’ve trained in academies where white belts only train with other white belts or don’t get to roll at all; after training here, I can see how that stunted my learning and appreciation for BJJ. The ability to train with guys/girls more experienced than me has helped me learn so much faster than my previous attempts at other academies and I can’t imagine not doing it. Team Culture and Community – The ability to train with higher belts has played a huge part in developing my BJJ game, but I’d argue the culture at BTT has played an even bigger role. Specifically, as soon as we’re on the mats, we’re instructed to behave with respect, safety, and competitiveness in mind – in that order. Why does this matter? In short, it allows everyone to train their hardest while minimizing the chances of physical injury or damaged egos – both equally detrimental to anyone’s BJJ career. You might be thinking, “Well, I’ll just be safe and I’ll be ok anywhere.” That is NOT the case. You’ll always be training with someone and if they’re not on the same page, you won’t be anymore protected than you would be being reckless yourself. This is especially true for new white belts who unknowingly focus on the competitive aspect of BJJ. BTT’s culture does a great job of establishing the right priorities when training to keep the team safe and active. Teaching Style – Lastly, and probably my most favorite part, is the teaching style at BTT. Specifically, you won’t find any lackluster, “here for a check” instructors at BTT; instead, you’re going to find instructors passionately looking to elevate their own level by elevating their training partners (i.e. you) and thus the whole team. This all begins with head coach Marcelo, who’s anything but a typical instructor. You’ll never get the impression that he’s dialing it in and reading out of BJJ book; instead you’ll get a no-nonsense breakdown of techniques, specific advice on how to adapt the techniques to your specific game, and sometimes a funny story or joke that ties everything together. This teaching style is one that is shared between all the instructors at BTT and is the backbone of the success they’ve seen over the years. If you still have your doubts, come check it out for yourself. Oss!

The professors are extremely knowledgeable and there is a plethora of people to roll with. This is a candid from after class from 3 black belts discussing fine details. This is the caliber you encounter here at BTT Long Beach.

This gym has been one of the best experiences of my life. The coaches are all so caring and focus heavily on technique. Such a positive environment and always learning something new! Great team.

My son attends this gym so my review is going consist of my experience on kids classes. First off he is in both kids classes and together the price is very affordable. All of the coaches take time to explain & correct technique , and are all very friendly. You can see how family oriented the staff is and how they rub that energy off on the kids. This is the 2nd gym we have enrolled our son in and I can’t see him being anywhere else. I have nothing negative I can say about this place. If you are debating on gyms, I would say this is a place you must check out.

If you are looking for a place to get in shape and feel better about yourself, this is the place for that. If you are looking for a place to actually train Mixed Martial Arts then this is really the place to go to. The coaches are outstanding in their knowledge and techniques. Very patient and have no problem making sure you understand what they are trying to teach. Not only just that, this gym is a REAL team. You will meet some genuinely kind and cool people. Nothing but cool vibes and great people. Once you sign up it’ll be impossible to want to go anywhere else. Show up for a free class and it will be impossible to say no. It simply becomes a lifestyle. Cant wait to go back soon. If you could not tell.. I HIGHLY recommend you the Chute Boxe Academy.
