What People Are Saying: 5 Customer Reviews

  1. The trainers are friendly, professional and maintain a positive decorum. Safety is prioritized and the gym is clean. I have been training here for about 100 days now, and have experienced no issues. It has been a wonderful experience. If anyone is looking to train in jujitsu in a non overzealous environment, this gym is for you! #Jujitsu #Safety #MMA #Selfdefense

  2. I am currently a student at Ronin athletics in Midtown. I joined the school to participate in the all women’s self defense program created by the Gracie Family, “Women Empowered.”

At first, I was very intimidated by the school and the program, but the instructors and the students were very welcoming to me as a newcomer. Christian Montes and Lara are really great instructors. Since I started my time in this program they have been very informative and they really take the time to coach and guide us through all of the techniques in great detail.

Since the day that I was randomly attacked near my home, I have been reluctant to go out anywhere by myself. Participating in this program has slowly helped me to become more confident in walking around by myself again. My husband still picks me up when I am coming home late, but it’s nice to know that I am learning how to defend myself. I really like coming to the school and drilling the techniques with my training partners.

We train in a very safe and friendly environment. Each class we are taught a new technique from the Gracie program and take turns drilling them with each other. Unlike most BJJ programs out there, we DO NOT free spar or roll in this class. It is geared specifically for women and designed to prepare us specifically for the kind of scenarios we may encounter on the street.

After completing my first training cycle, I have earned one stripe on my white belt. I believe there are 15 classes and you have to take each one 3 times. Then at the end of the program I will be able to test for the “Women Empowered Pink belt.”

Ladies, if you are reading this, don’t wait around until you are attacked by some low life on the street to start training. Start learning how to protect and defend yourself now, BEFORE anything bad happens to you. Ronin Athletics provides a free trial class so don’t hesitate to go over and give it a go. You will not regret it. If you do go, tell them that Christine sent you!

  3. I went to a Gracie Jiu Jitsu Women Empowered self defense class at Ronin Athletics in NYC and really loved the structure of the class. It is clear that Christian is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about what he does as he teaches with patience, clear instruction, and a smile. Lora teaches the class alongside Christian ensuring each student gets individual attention on their technique. I recommend anyone to try it out as the environment was very welcoming and the techniques were appropriate for beginners and intermediates alike.

  4. As a mom of two boys ages 6 and 10. I put my kids in different activities and none have made an impact on them like Ronin Athletics. My older son during quarantine was reluctant to do any sports. It was a hassle to get him up and out. I was very lucky a family member of mine told me to do a trail class for the Gracie Bullyproof Program. The boys tried the class in August 2020 and they immediately asked me to sign them up. We have been a member ever since.
The staff is so welcoming, show so much patience and run their class so smoothly. My older son is in Junior Grapplers program and has formed a bond with his teammates. He will be soon traveling alone to middle school in NYC and I am pleased to see the confidence he has built during his time a Ronin.
My 6 year old is in Little Champs program he is very shy but week after week, Coach Christian and his team have been able to bring him out of his shell. I am so pleased they have found something to look forward to in jujitsu. My husband and I go 4x a week to Ronin Athletics but it is worth it to see them learn and grow all while having fun.

  5. I joined in February and I’m extremely happy I enrolled in this school. They offer great self defense classes for all ages (perhaps the best in New York City) and their instructors are fantastic. The instructors are patient, motivational and inspiring. Not to mention, it’s a fantastic work out. Not only has Gracie Jiujitsu helped me physically (down over 20 lbs now), but it has also helped me mentally. It helped me be more confident with decisions in life and how I view the world from a different perspective. The students are very accepting and helpful with training. I have a great time and lots of fun with them. It’s like having a second family. I highly recommend this school, their curriculums and the instructors.

I’ve been a student here for over a year, I really enjoy the Muay Thai and BJJ group classes. Great instructors who are knowledgeable and supportive. I felt right at home as a beginner! And shoutout to my coach Pj for those killer private lessons!

What an amazing school with a great vibe! I stopped in when Master Renzo and John Danaher were doing a charity seminar for one of their students who had cancer. Students were super cool and it was an amazing experience to walk into the World Headquarters of the Renzo Gracie Academy for the first time!

Top instructors, history of excellence, very clean, and family friendly. Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts, Wrestling, Boxing… I love this gym! If you or your family are looking to increase physical fitness, improve overall health, learn self-defense, train with top athletes, learn from the best in BJJ, MMA, and Muay Thai… I highly recommend this gym!!

I have been working privately with Elijah, who is an incredible person and teacher. He has been super supportive and patient with me with my very first intro to Muay Thai. I can’t say enough great things about him. All of the staff I have met here have been really kind and encouraging as well. Having no prior experience, Renzo Gracie has really made me feel very comfortable and welcomed into their family. If you’re thinking about trying this out, do it.

The Mecca of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Northeast. All the staff is extremely friendly from the front desk to all the professors. Classes are taught by high level professors who’ve been learning from the best of the best. All students are very welcoming and helpful. If you’re looking for high level training, recreational training or even to get in healthy lifestyle — highly recommended.

From the day 1 beginner to the professional athlete, Unity is one of the most inclusive and inviting atmospheres you’ll ever find at an NYC gym. Owner, Murilo Santana, and all of the teaching staff have a wealth of knowledge and years of experience to share with you. I would highly recommend dropping in for a free trial class. Unity is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Truly an embodiment of their motto: “hard work by good people”.

I came in as a drop-in (blue belt) from abroad as I was here in a work trip. The staff & people at the gym were very friendly and welcoming – excellent vibes. Lots of space, clean, etc. and great training too. Worth the $40. Did the morning classes (7-9). The instructor wasn’t very friendly / patient / kind however which made me feel a bit unwelcome. Overall still a cool experience and will definitely come back.

The instructors and staff are awesome. It is a very inclusive atmosphere where the practitioners are all friendly and the rolls are very challenging. I was humbled by how understanding everyone has been in regards to my disability and I’m proud to train under Unity.

Went here as a white belt drop-in during vacation. I bought a day-pass with which I joined for an 1 hour and a 2 hour regular class. Classes were well organized and instructors were helpful. Mat space was a bit limited for the amount of students. Staff, instructors and students were all very friendly and the gym had a nice vibe in general. Dressing rooms were clean. Would come here again if I come back to NYC.

This place is a dream- women are permitted and encouraged to train as athletes. Regardless of size, there is always someone suitable to work with and during my visits it has never once felt like someone is using pure brute force to try to hurt me or to eek out a cheap win in a roll. The instructors and students both are attentive and detail oriented. This is real jiu jitsu, worth relocating to the city if you’re considering it.
